About wetter.com: Europe’s trusted weather companion

wetter.com is one of the leading and most popular online weather platforms in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and other countries of the European Union, trusted by up to 26M users every month across the web and app, plus TV viewers.

On a mission to be the best weather companion, wetter.com is backed by a team of experienced data scientists, meteorologists, and editors, offering everything from precise precipitation radars to HD live webcams and in-depth advisory articles.

With a 4.7–star rating in the Play Store, wetter.com is for certain one of the most trusted sources of weather information that guides Europeans’ daily lives.

Challenge: Be the first to deliver weather news

When thunderstorms, fog, or dangerous heatwaves hit, speed is everything. Users should be notified instantly and accurately — often before other platforms or TV channels can alert them.

An extra challenge comes from the nature of weather alerts — time-sensitive and location-specific:

Weather changes are unpredictable. When a storm hits, we need to send out millions of push notifications immediately.

In Germany alone, we have over 12k warning zones, and each one has to receive its localized alerts.

What another customer engagement failed to deliver

We tried implementing another CRM solution, but it didn’t work out. It wasn’t able to scale our weather alerts or deliver them fast enough. It also required more effort from our backend team — and we wanted to minimize the load on our developers.

This experience reaffirmed the unique value Pushwoosh provided.

Technological solution: Pushwoosh’s fail-proof delivery at scale

With the Pushwoosh API, wetter.com can execute complex, large-scale sends seamlessly. The matching of a user’s chosen warning regions and alert levels happens on the Pushwoosh side, minimizing the workload on wetter.com’s internal resources.

wetter.com leverages Pushwoosh’s powerful segmentation and API-triggered notifications to deliver a seamless user experience.

  • wetter.com’s backend calculates significant weather changes for specific locations and triggers an API call to Pushwoosh.
  • Pushwoosh matches a user’s chosen warning regions and alert levels, then sends the alert to the relevant user segment at incredible speed.

This way, the workload on wetter.com’s internal resources stays minimal.

We’ve remained Pushwoosh customers since 2018 because of its scalability and deliverability. I can’t remember a single day when an issue with our weather warnings would seriously affect us.

But technology is only part of the equation. wetter.com’s success comes from a powerful communication strategy.

Strategic solution: User-centric communication

We see push notifications as part of the product, not just marketing. They must be functional.

We don’t send some clickbait warnings or simple CTAs. We want to provide value already in the message. Because the notifications that matter, you never pause.

What messages does wetter.com send, and how does the team ensure their relevance?

1. Hyper-targeted alerts based on users’ location and significant weather changes

Temperature drops, sudden rainfall, or high UV radiation — these are the kinds of conditions where alerts must reach affected users instantly.
To determine the segment that receives the alert, wetter.com’s backend sends API calls to Pushwoosh with filters such as:

  • Real-time user location
  • Language preference
  • Subscribed alert types and severity levels

Pushwoosh handles the audience matching and message delivery at scale.

2. User-controlled segmentation for higher relevance of automated notifications

User-centric alerts are a top priority for us. We see them as a core feature of our app.

In the wetter.com app, every user can define what kind of alerts they want to receive — and at what urgency level.

  • Alert categories include rain, storm, strong wind, extreme heat, etc.
  • Each category has multiple severity levels.
  • Users can also choose unlimited warn regions — areas where they want to stay informed even if they aren’t physically present.

This setup is powered by Pushwoosh’s advanced segmentation, ensuring users only receive the alerts they care about.

3. Video forecast delivered in push notifications

wetter.com also uses push notifications to distribute video content — short daily forecasts that provide additional context and keep users engaged.

These videos are pushed via Pushwoosh to users on Android, iOS, and web platforms.

4. A/B testing push notification copy

We always test which version of the push works better. With Pushwoosh, A/B testing is easy.
